Netherlands' First Barrier-Free, AET Tollway Will Open December 7

Trans.iNFO reports, the Netherlands infrastructure ministry will open the A24-Blankenburg Connection tollway in metro Rotterdam on December 7, 2024. “The long-anticipated road will link the A15 at Rozenburg with the A20 at Vlaardingen, providing a crucial new route for traffic flow and economic stimulation in the area.” The highway and tunnel complex will be the nation’s first to have an all-electronic, open-road toll collection system. Initial toll rates will range between €1.51 (about US$1.70) for passenger cars and vans, motorcycles, and certain electric-powered commercial vans, to €9.13 (about US$10.20) for commercial trucks. Starting January 1, 2026, toll rates will be adjusted annually for inflation.

The new facility’s only current electronic payment provider will be MOVE-IZI, a prepaid toll system developed by Brisa Group’s IZI-TO subsidiary. The ministry has published a website with information about the collection system.

The infrastructure ministry recently issued a news release (in Dutch) regarding the facility and its planned opening.

Florida DOT Won't Finish Sanibel Causeway Restoration Until 2027

It’s been nearly two years since Hurricane Ian washed away much of the tolled Sanibel Island Causeway in Lee County, Florida. Within weeks of the disaster, FDOT and a host of contractors completed an emergency repair that provided a temporary surface link to the mainland. The county was allowed to restore general public access and resume toll collection by early 2023. This year, traffic was finally routed onto permanent lanes. However, as Naples Daily News reports, complete restoration of the tollway will take considerably more time. “While significant progress has been made, there is still work to be done and officials have said it will be 2027 before the project can be considered finished.”

Federal V2X Deployment Plan Concerns Some Privacy Advocates

Marketplace reports, following the release of USDOT’s vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology deployment plan, some observers are warning that privacy guardrails are needed to safeguard the data from hacking or from misuse by police or advertisers. Laura Chace, president and CEO of Intelligent Transportation Society of America, predicts that V2X technology could be mobilized in passenger vehicles by the 2028 model year. But Cliff Braun, associate director of technology policy for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), has concerns about how the accumulated data will be managed and protected. “You know, there’s only so many Honda Civics of this trim that drive down a certain road at a certain time of day,” he commented in regard to techniques for filtering or hacking even anonymized data. Braun and others are calling for strict protections regarding data retention and access.

On the related issue of tolling data privacy, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) recently told NPR it’s a factor in his state’s maintenance of abortion rights. Illinois has become a hub for obtaining the procedure as other states outlaw abortion or impose limits on providers. Illinois law now bars the release of toll records to any out-of-state prosecutor who seeks information about a woman’s travel to obtain the procedure. “People are coming from all over the country, it seems, to exercise their rights and know that they will be protected if they come to our state,” Pritzker said.
