Kapsch Will Provide End-To-End Tolling Service For Louisiana Replacement Bridge

Kapsch TrafficCom issued a news release to mark the financial close of the $2.3 billion I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge replacement project, a public-private partnership. Last week, the Louisiana transportation department issued a notice to proceed to the chosen consortium, Plenary Americas-led Calcasieu Bridge Partners (CBP). Kapsch is CBP’s end-to-end tolling services contractor and system integrator. Kapsch stated the tolling portion of the project is valued at $230 million over a period of fifty years.

Kapsch will provide roadside and back-office systems, and customer service support leveraging its earlier Louisiana deployments on LA 1 and the Belle Chasse Bridge. JB Kendrick, president of Kapsch TrafficCom North America, commented, “We are honored to be part of such a transformative project. . . .  The 50-year contract duration is exceptional and underscores [Louisiana’s] confidence in our technology and expertise to support this vital corridor’s long-term success.”

Motor Failure Indefinitely Halts Vehicle Access To New Jersey Toll Bridge

The Cape May County (New Jersey) Bridge Commission announced yesterday that the Middle Thorofare Bridge (also known as Two Mile Bridge) is closed to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians for an indefinite period. On Saturday morning, the drive shaft motor that raises and lowers the toll bridge for marine traffic failed. “The bridge electrical engineers performed many tests, concluding that the motor was inoperable and irreparable.” The commission stated it is reviewing “all options available both nationally and globally” to find a replacement for the “highly specialized” motor, but a “best-case scenario” is that the process will take “many weeks.” The span’s deck will remain in the open position because vessels have the right of way and the commercial fishing industry needs ocean and dock access.

OCNJ Daily reports, the span, a “key route for traffic at the shore traveling between Wildwood Crest and Cape May,” opened in 1940 and is one of four commission bridges considered “structurally deficient (and) functionally obsolete.” All four are due for replacement. The estimated cost of replacing the Middle Thorofare Bridge is $238 million to $243 million, according to the county.
