PANYNJ Files Lawsuits Against Eight Major Scofflaws
Patch (New York City) reports, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), acting through outside counsel, has filed lawsuits against eight companies and individuals — most of them located in New Jersey — who repeatedly failed to pay toll bills over years-long periods. The authority’s aim is to recover $592,000 in tolls it is owed. (The language of the PANYNJ complaints suggests that the defendants made a practice of using E-ZPass-only lanes without having functioning transponders.) Although the authority declined to comment on specific cases, a spokesperson said, “Not only will we catch you if you try to skip out on tolls, but you’ll end up paying far more than if you hadn’t broken the law in the first place. Toll scofflaws undermine the critical infrastructure that keeps our region moving, and we’ll keep pursuing them until they pay their due.”

USDOT recently announced that FHWA made $10 million in “quick release” Emergency Relief funds immediately available to the Vermont Agency of Transportation to help restore essential transportation infrastructure after last month’s devastating floods throughout the state. The installment is considered a downpayment on future aid to repair roads and bridges. Weeks of heavy rains in July caused extensive flooding and washouts, as well as landslides. In a comment on the aid distribution, USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, “I saw firsthand the devastating effects of extreme flooding on people and businesses in Vermont, and increasingly frequent climate disasters have wreaked havoc on more and more American communities.”
