Washington State DOT Opens Seven-Mile HOV Lane Slated For Conversion To HOT
Washington State DOT announced the opening Friday night of a seven-mile stretch of the new northbound SR 167 high occupancy vehicle lane. “This is a long-awaited improvement” for Pierce County commuters, according to project engineer Justin Janke. “Opening the new northbound HOV lane will reduce travel times and increase capacity during peak commute hours.” The new lane connects to an existing HOT lane that runs from Auburn into Renton. Although it will remain in HOV status for the time being, WSDOT plans to convert it to an HOT lane in 2025.

WBAL reports, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is installing a new automated lane closure system on approaches to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to improve safety and reduce congestion when two-way traffic operations are put into effect. The $58 million system uses dynamic message signs, illuminated pavement markings, and 46 remotely controlled gates that will eventually replace “the current labor-intensive placement of cones and barrels.”
An MDTA project website says system installation, which began in early 2020, is expected to be complete this fall. The site includes a video illustrating the operation of the system.
