MassDOT Reveals Proposed Timeline For $4.5 Billion Cape Cod Bridges Replacement Project

WCAI reports, “The new Sagamore Bridge could open in 2034 and the Bourne Bridge about a year later, if all goes according to plan. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced an updated timeline [on Thursday night, April 25] , with new details, at a public information session held online. Following two years of federal review, major events in the life of the $4.5 billion [Cape Bridges project] would unfold in 2026: the final permits secured in the spring, preliminary design of the Sagamore Bridge complete by summer, and a draft Request for Proposals to start the contractors’ bidding process in the fall.” WCAI looks at design and funding issues the state must resolve in order to proceed according to its timeline. It also takes note of new conceptual renderings MassDOT released during Thursday’s meeting.

Florida DOT Opened The Gateway Expressway Friday Afternoon

WTSP reports, Florida DOT opened its newest toll facilities — the Gateway Expressway network of toll roads and tolled express lanes — on schedule around noon on Friday. A seven-year construction project has given Tampa drivers a “direct connection between U.S. Highway 19 and Interstate 275 in Pinellas County, leading to the Howard Frankland Bridge into Hillsborough County or southward to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.” During a week-long introductory period, no tolls will be charged. FDOT expects the $595.3 million undertaking to draw traffic from congested secondary roads and save some drivers 10 to 15 minutes in travel time. WTSP’s article includes a detailed description of the new facilities and a list of ancillary road improvements accomplished during the project.
