Refurbishment Of New Jersey Turnpike And Garden State Parkway Service Areas Nears Completion

NJ.com reports, a $250 million multiyear P3 project “to reconstruct or renovate all of the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway service areas” is nearing an end. According to New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) spokesperson Tom Feeney, the last four facilities to be replaced or rehabilitated will open by July 4. This week, NJTA commissioners “took one of the final actions on the project” when they approved a $30 million reimbursement payment to Applegreen, whose parent company assumed a service area renovation and operating concession contract with the state through a 2021 transaction with HMSHost. The reimbursement covers parking lot work — a state responsibility — done at four service areas by Applegreen’s contractor. NJ.com recaps the contract history of the public-private partnership the Chris Christie administration formed in 2017 to obtain private financing of the service area refurbishments. The article also lists the food service offerings that will be available at the four facilities soon to reopen.
