Utah Adopts EV Charging Tax And Reduces Its Gas Tax

Transport Topics reports, beginning July 1, commercial EV charging stations in Utah will pay a 12.5 percent tax on the electricity they supply, while the tax on gas and diesel will drop by 2 cents. The changes are part of several transportation tax amendments included in HB 301, signed into law April 18 by Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R). The lower fuel tax was characterized by the bill’s sponsor as inflation relief, plus a course correction to a 2015 tax strategy that ultimately caused the surcharge to rise more than anticipated. After an automatic increase of 4.5 cents in January, the two-cent drop will bring the rate to 36.4 cents per gallon. The article also describes the state’s five-year plan for EV charging buildout.

MTA Pledges To Reduce Operations Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 85 Percent

New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last week announced a commitment to reducing its operation’s emissions by 85 percent from a 2015 baseline. A press release indicates that reductions will be achieved through capital investments for facilities updates, transitioning all its fleets to no- or low-emissions buses and trains, and improving energy efficiency through “energy management technologies, regenerative energy and power storage, and deploying on-site renewable energy installations.” The agency further pledged to incorporate climate considerations into its Twenty-Year Needs Assessment this fall, and to prioritize historically disadvantaged communities as it rolls out pollution-reduction plans.
