Editorial: Scrap the New Jersey Toll Hikes and Reevaluate Capital Spending Needs
The Press of Atlantic City opposes capital improvement and toll increase plans proposed by the New Jersey Turnpike and the South Jersey Transportation authorities. The newspaper’s editorial board writes, “The expressway toll hikes seem to be part of a statewide coordinated effort to ensure perpetual funding for projects without meaningful public oversight. . . . Legislative leaders and [Governor Phil] Murphy should reject the toll hikes on all three highways and insist the increases and their planned spending be reevaluated in light of the record unemployment and severe damage to the New Jersey economy by the COVID-19 shutdown.”

Daily News (New York) reports, “Transit advocates, trade union officials and construction honchos joined up [yesterday] in a letter to New York’s downstate Congressional delegation that demands it make good on the MTA’s request for another $3.9 billion in federal coronavirus relief. The transit agency got $3.8 billion in a relief package signed by President Trump on March 27. The letter — signed by 55 organizations including Riders Alliance, the Regional Plan Association and construction giant WSP — said the $3.8 billion is not enough to cover the agency’s bills.”
