Small Oklahoma Community Is Discouraged By Turnpike Expansion Work Stoppage
The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority’s recent decision to temporarily halt work on the ACCESS Oklahoma expansion initiative affects all proposed projects, not just the ones landowners southeast of Oklahoma City have been fighting. Residents of tiny Davenport in Lincoln County tell KWTV they are disappointed about the delay’s impact on a plan to widen the Turner Turnpike between I-35 and and SH-66. One aim of that project (Number T-26008) is to construct a new interchange that the townspeople see as crucial to economic development.
Last summer, The Oklahoman talked to Davenport residents about the effect Eisenhower-era turnpike construction had on some previously thriving small towns, and why they place so much importance on the proposed new Turner interchange.

KQED reports on Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the $581 million San Mateo 101 Express Lanes project. The 22-mile-long, US 101 facility, whose final segment opened to traffic in March, is intended “to reduce traffic congestion and encourage carpooling and transit use along one of the busiest thoroughfares on the San Francisco Peninsula.” Congressman Kevin Mullin (D-CA 15), one of the officials participating in the ceremony, said the lanes are good for the economy and the region’s environment. There was also official praise for the unique Community Transportation Benefits Program that uses some toll revenue to defray transportation expenses for low-income county residents. However, several people with objections to the project also attended the event to voice their concerns that any highway widening leads to induced congestion and deprives public transit programs of needed funding.
