USDOT Announces $300 Million In Competitive Grant Awards For Nine Bridge Projects
USDOT yesterday announced nearly $300 million in 2022 Bridge Investment Program competitive grant awards to nine small- and medium-size projects. The projects span eight states and the District of Columbia; individual grants range from $15.1 million to $73 million. The funding announcement follows the department’s award of $20 million in bridge-planning grants in October 2022, and $2.1 billion in large-bridge projects in January of this year. Overall, the Bridge Investment Program, a complement to the $27.5-billion Bridge Formula Program, will release $12.5 billion in IIJA funding over five years for rebuilding, repair and replacement projects.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced it will be publishing a Request for Information next week for the purpose of seeking public input on ways to make the environmental review process for surface transportation projects more efficient and effective. With funding and guidance from the Inflation Reduction Act, the administration is looking to “facilitate efficient and effective reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act and other Federal processes,” which could include “identifying new strategies that would mitigate environmental impacts and thereby reduce timeframes for environmental reviews.” FHWA is also inviting feedback on the most helpful types of assistance for grantees, which program areas are most ripe for research, and the best ways to make its resources available. Upon publication, the RFI will be accessible, and comments will be accepted, through the Regulations.gov website.
