National Academies Report Cites Shortcomings In US Effort To Improve Road Safety
Despite major investments in research and programming, US road safety has deteriorated recently, especially in minority communities and among “vulnerable” users, such as pedestrians and bicyclists, according to Tackling the Road Safety Crisis: Saving Lives Through Research and Actions, a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The publication announcement states that the study reveals both a failure to pursue previous recommendations for action to stem personal injury and property damage and “significant gaps and shortcomings” in traffic safety research that the US is only starting to address.
The report calls on USDOT “to exercise leadership in rallying the involvement of the many parties across the country that are integral to road safety practice, the research enterprise, and the implementation of research results in the field. As part of these efforts, USDOT should establish a coordinated, data-driven national road safety research strategy across all federally funded safety programs. Persistent gaps in research agenda in relation to national crash outcomes is indicative of the lack of national-level guidance in road safety research planning and programming, so the report also calls for systematic research to confirm the validity of safety guidance for practitioners, and to eliminate outdated and unproven guidance.”
The report can be read online or downloaded at no charge.
