I-77 Express Dynamic Tolling Suspended To Facilitate Hurricane Recovery

I-77 Mobility Partners has temporarily adjusted the tolling of the express lanes north of Charlotte, North Carolina, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, WSOC reports. In a news release issued Friday, the company stated it first capped rates, then temporarily suspended I-77 Express dynamic pricing “to help mitigate the financial impacts on drivers . . . as the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Helene continue to be felt across the region.” I-77 is one of the routes the state has designated as an alternative to interstates damaged by the hurricane. Before Friday, volume in the 26.4-mile express lane corridor hadn’t significantly increased.

The Cintra-led partnership stated its action will limit the expense of evacuating the affected region or transporting relief to distressed communities. Rates will still fluctuate throughout the day “based on predetermined rates that will be lower than pre-storm dynamic pricing. However, by removing the traffic management provided by dynamic pricing, more drivers may choose to use the express lanes, which could result in slower than usual speeds.”

Cornelius Today reports, several state officials, including Governor Roy Cooper (D), encouraged I-77 Mobility Partners to make a rate accommodation.

Netherlands Truck Toll System Will Foster "Innovation And Sustainability"

Pitane.Blue reports, the Dutch truck toll system coming online in 2026 “is specifically intended to enable investments in cleaner and more efficient transport solutions, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management announced.” The minister, Barry Madlener, said the scheme will help freight haulers prepare for a future of cleaner, more efficient operation.

The government estimates that truck tolls will yield EUR 1.6 billion (USD 1.75 billion) of revenue by 2030. Approximately half the money will fund the country’s ongoing Purchase Subsidy Scheme for Zero-Emission Trucks (AanZET), a program that incentivizes companies to convert their fleets to zero-emission vehicles. The tolls will also fund the construction of EV charging infrastructure and hydrogen filling stations, and support research into innovations, such as roadway inductive charging.

In July, Vitronic won a government contract to provide an important component of the truck toll system.
