Scammers Abuse Kansas Turnpike's Brand. New York Thruway And Louisiana Issue New Warnings.

The Wichita Eagle reports, the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) learned yesterday that smishing scammers are now using the name and logo of its new electronic toll system, DriveKS, in fraudulent texts that purport to be collecting unpaid KTA tolls and fees. The agency issued an alert warning the public against clicking links in the text messages. KTA emphasized it does not send unsolicited text messages or engage in toll collection by text.

WUTR reports that the New York State Thruway Authority recently renewed its public warning against fraudulent texts containing messages that closely mimic legitimate authority domain names and images.

NOLA.com covers the ongoing scam activity in Louisiana. Officials with GeauxPass, the state’s tolling system, “said in a [Tuesday news release] that a web address in the scam text directs recipients to an unaffiliated website, where they are asked [to] settle a false balance by providing personal and financial information.”

Locals Object To Proposed Toll On New New Zealand Highway

Radio New Zealand reports, some residents on the country’s North Island are concerned about the suggestion that a highway currently under construction should be tolled when it opens in mid-2025. Construction started on the NZD 620 million (USD 383.3 million), 11-kilometer (6.84-mile) Te Ahu a Turanga highway about eight years ago, after State Highway 3 was closed due to rockslides. Residents who’ve been counting on the new facility are startled by a New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) proposal to charge tolls of about NZD 4.30 (USD 2.66) per trip for light vehicles and NZD 8.60 (USD 5.32) for trucks. At those rates, weekly toll costs would add up to nearly NZD 50 (USD 30.91) for regular users. Alternative routes are considered less safe, as they wind through rural areas on surfaces never intended for heavy use.

Opponents of the tolling argue that the number of people who will avoid the tolled highway would undermine the facility’s financial viability while also defeating intended safety benefits. The local council in Tararua is campaigning against the toll, but a community group called Positively Woodville is advocating for it. NZTA currently is accepting online comments on the proposal, which was sparked by the current government’s Policy Statement on Land Transport 2024, which establishes an expectation that tolling will be considered for the construction and maintenance of new major roads. A 2020 study found that tolling the highway could be viable, but the NZTA board at the time declined to pursue it. The current public consultation will be considered by the new NZTA board, which may recommend tolling to Transport Minister Simeon Brown. A final decision will be made in cabinet.

TVNZ also covers this story.

TRN notes, NZTA is now conducting public reviews of tolling proposals for two additional North Island road projects.
