Engineers Undertake Detailed Inspection Of 119-Year-Old DRJTBC Span

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) announced that engineers will be conducting an assessment of the Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge’s structure over the next two weeks, weather permitting. “[T]he upcoming detailed inspections will be integral to determining what future course of action the Commission might take with the 119-year-old narrow operationally challenged six-span steel superstructure and its 190-year-old rubble-filled masonry piers built on wooden-crib foundations.” The structural evaluation will inform a National Environmental Policy Act alternatives analysis DRJTBC launched earlier this year. The inspections will make  traffic pattern changes necessary during off-peak weekday hours.

Officials and residents of several communities are challenging the bridge replacement option under consideration by the commission.

Popular Kapsch On-Board Unit Has Distinctive Environmental Qualities

A Kapsch TrafficCom news release highlights the sustainability of one of the firm’s flagship products, the TRP-4010 on-board unit. The TÜV-tested and certified ETC device’s carbon footprint makes it “the smallest, lightest and most sustainable” device of its kind on the market, Kapsch states.

Moreover, Kapsch offers a refurbishment service that keeps used units in circulation. As Juliane Höbarth, head of product security, standardization and environmental sustainability explains, The electronic components in the TRP-4010 last much longer than the battery. By renewing the battery and increasing quality assurance measures, we can achieve a significantly longer service life without compromising on quality.”

Kapsch subjects refurbished units to the same quality controls as new units and disposes of depleted batteries in an environmentally friendly way. “Compared to a freshly produced unit, an average of 31% of emissions can be saved,” Kapsch states, noting that refurbishing old units also significantly reduces electronic waste.

Höbarth observes that an added benefit of the refurbishment service is that it ensures devices remain available for distribution in the event a global supply chain disruption affects manufacturing processes.

Greece Will Lower Athens Ring Road Toll Rate In October

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today that Attiki Odos toll rates will be go down from the current rate of €2.80 (US$3.11) to €2.50 (USD $2.78) starting October 6, Ekathimerini reports. The article adds that the tollway’s new concession agreement will contribute €3 billion (US$3.33 billion) to public finances. (That projection is in line with expectations last summer when GEK Terna was identified as the preferred bidder for the concession.) The facility is also referred to as the Attica Tollway or Athens ring road.

To Vima reports, Mr. Mitsotakis made the rate reduction announcement at a cabinet meeting that dealt broadly with quality of life improvements and inflation-fighting measures for Greek citizens. On transportation, the prime minister highlighted his government’s focus on improving mass transit, noting that 950 new buses will be on the road in Athens and Thessaloniki by next summer. He also emphasized the need for government transparency in all the nation’s ongoing transportation projects.
