Missouri Commission Prepares For Nationwide DOT Director Search, Names Interim Director

Missouri DOT (MoDOT) announced that the state’s Highways and Transportation Commission will launch a nationwide search for someone to replace outgoing MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna after its September 5 monthly meeting. The commission plans to post a vacancy announcement in early September “with the intent to have a new director in place by the end of the year.” The selection process will be open to internal and external candidates. The commission has selected deputy director Ed Hassinger to serve as the department’s interim leader after McKenna’s September 20 departure. (McKenna will become president and CEO of The Eno Center for Transportation on October 7.)

Between now and the morning of September 3, the commission is accepting public comment on the credentials and personal attributes considered important to the position. An input form is available at www.modot.org/mhtc.

Illinois Tollway Resumes Extra Roadway Patrols During Another Heat Wave

The Illinois Tollway Authority announced it is once again operating special Hot Weather Patrols this week “to provide more rapid assistance to any customers stranded along its roads during the dangerously high temperatures and humidity expected to continue into [tomorrow, Wednesday].” A minimum of 12 patrol units operating around the clock will supplement the GEICO-sponsored Highway Emergency Lane Patrol (HELP) trucks that routinely aid motorists between 5:00 AM and 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The units search for stranded drivers and respond to calls for assistance. A patrol unit operates from  a crew cab truck equipped with an arrow board “and can accommodate passengers if motorists need to get out of the heat or be transported to a Tollway maintenance garage or Tollway oasis while service is obtained. Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse comments, “Deploying Hot Weather Patrols provides an additional layer of protection when it is critical that we rapidly reach drivers who need help and give them the assistance they need so they can safely resume their travels. . . .”

Philippines Delays Implementation Of Toll Violation Penalties

Autoindustriya.com reports, the Philippines Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered a 30-day implementation postponement for the new toll violation penalties announced last week by the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB). Penalties for invalid or unreadable RFID stickers and insufficient account balances were set to take effect August 31. “According to DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, they have decided to defer its implementation to October 1, 2024, to give tollway operators more time to inform the public about the new guidelines.”

Some lawmakers and former public officials have criticized the new rules since they were first announced last week.
