Bay Area Express Lanes Revenue Exceed Expectations

NBC News Bay Area reports, the San Francisco Bay region now has more than 300 miles of tolled express lanes in operation or under construction. According to data from the Bay Area Infrastructure Financing Authority — an arm of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) — the facilities generated over $123 million in revenue last year, surpassing the expectations of the various operating agencies. Although the article focuses on how that money is being spent and what authorities are doing to enforce the operating rules, it also covers a tour of some East Bay express lanes conducted by MTC’s John Goodwin.

Deprived Of Congestion Toll Revenue, MTA Is Staring At Yet Another Crisis

The New York Times reports, following the indefinite postponement of congestion pricing and the revenue stream MTA expected it to produce, experts are warning that transit customers will see a return of the so-called “Summer of Hell.” Former Governor Mario Cuomo used that appellation to describe several months during 2017 when city residents and visitors experienced subway system failures that “left passengers stranded without service, trapped them in dark, hot cars and injured them in derailments.” Congestion pricing toll revenue was supposed to make possible the billions of dollars in additional capital investments needed to continue MTA’s campaign to revitalize a century-old transit system strained by multiple maintenance deferrals. Without that funding or some replacement for it, experts warn that “engineering emergencies” like the ones that occurred seven years ago are inevitable. They add that the effects of climate change — hotter, more humid summers and flooding — make system breakdown risks even greater than they once were. The article includes an updated assessment of MTA’s budgetary threats and the likelihood a substitute funding source will be delivered by Governor Kathy Hochul (D) and state lawmakers.
