WCVB reports, next week is the start of a month-long complete closure of the Sumner Tunnel, “one of the few routes in and out of East Boston” and an important connection to Boston’s airport. In an interview, MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver warned of potential road traffic impacts and encouraged commuters to take advantage of mitigation measures that include free train and ferry trips, free and reduced fees at transit system parking lots, and discounted Tobin Bridge and Ted Williams Tunnel tolls. “We really want to reserve as much capacity on the roadways for those folks who don’t have any other opportunities,” he said. MassDOT is engaged in a multiyear, $160-million tunnel rehabilitation project. During the upcoming closure, crews will concentrate on roadway resurfacing work. Even after the scheduled August 5 reopening, some weekend-long closures will be necessary.
Last summer, MassDOT rehabilitation work closed the tunnel for two months. Officials subsequently determined that relatively few commuters took advantage of transit service inducements, preferring to drive on congested alternate routes.
