New York Police Agencies Seize 192 Vehicles In Toll Scofflaw And "Ghost Car" Roundups
The New York City interagency task force assigned to intercept persistent toll violators and “ghost cars” recently conducted more operations, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced yesterday. The overall results of three enforcement actions — on June 14 (at the Henry Hudson and Broadway Bridges), on June 15 (at the RFK, Willis Avenue and Third Avenue Bridges), and on June 17 (at the Henry Hudson and 181 Street Bridges) — were:
- 192 vehicles were seized for offenses including unpaid tolls, no registration, driver’s license suspension and other traffic infractions.
- 50 people were arrested, including a man wanted in Virginia who was driving a stolen vehicle with a stolen license plate that is connected to an auto dealership fraud case.
- 1,809 summonses were issued.
MTA notes that the scofflaws stopped by police “had amassed $1.5 million in unpaid tolls and fees, judgments, and debts.”

Seventy years ago today, the New York State Thruway Authority collected its first tolls after then-Governor Thomas E. Dewey, in whose memory the facility is dedicated, ceremonially opened a 115-mile segment between Lowell, Oneida County, and Rochester. Three other major stretches opened that year between August 26 and December 22. According to a Thruway news release marking the anniversary, “During its first year of operation, there were a total of 8,700,000 trips made by motorists with mileage totaling 522,000,000.” The authority has commemorated this milestone event by posting a video and a gallery of historical images on its website. And today, Applegreen, the operator of the Thruway’s service plazas, is offering coffee at 31 cents per cup — reflecting 1954 pricing — at all 17 of its c-store locations. In addition to thanking customers, employees and partners for their decades of support, Thruway chief executive Frank Hoare noted that the highway’s opening was a source of pride for New Yorkers.

Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) chief executive Ferzan Ahmed issued a statement today in which he noted that “most vehicle crashes are preventable and underscore the need for greater self-awareness when operating a motor vehicle whether it is on two wheels, four wheels, or 18 wheels.” His news release highlighted the start of Global Road Safety Week, which IBTTA and partner tolling agencies in the US and overseas are observing as part of a year-long “Be Safe Together” campaign.
The importance of the campaign and its message — drive with empathy for yourself and for others traveling and working on highways — was underscored Friday morning by an incident on the Ohio Turnpike. According to an OTIC social media post, a commission employee who was setting up an Erie County work zone “was struck while seated inside his work vehicle by a motorist traveling in a sport utility vehicle. It is fortunate that the injuries sustained by the Ohio Turnpike worker and the driver and passenger in the SUV – who were transported to a local medical facility for evaluation and treatment – are not life threatening.”
