Kansas Turnpike Assures Drivers New ETC System Will Preserve Data Privacy
As the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) prepares drivers for this summer’s switch to a cashless collection system, it has responded to data privacy concerns with assurances that it never sells customer data and only shares vehicle registration and account information in response to court orders, subpoenas and warrants, or to aid law enforcement in emergencies such as child abductions and searches for missing seniors. The article also recaps basic facts about KTA’s new DriveKS system and the changes it will bring about when it begins operation on the night of June 30.

The Kansas and Missouri DOTs announced that KC Scout, their jointly operated digital traffic management system for metro Kansas City, is beginning to recover from a cyberattack of undisclosed origin sustained on April 25. Although the system has been inoperable during the past several weeks’ restoration effort, testing of dynamic message signs will start today. “If testing is successful, real-time information should return to the boards in the next week. Returning real-time information is considered the first step to restoring all KC Scout systems and services. Additional restoration efforts continue and include having the website operational, camera views available online, and camera stream access for media partners. An update will be provided as service restoration nears for both the public and the media.”
WDAF and The Kansas City Star reported in April that the system, which includes a website, traffic camera network and mobile phone app, as well as the dynamic message signs, was taken offline after the early morning attack to limit damage. In the meantime, motorists have had access to other traffic condition warning and information resources.

The Second Conference on Advancing Transportation Equity (CATE), hosted by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and sponsored by FHWA, is scheduled for July 15-18 in Baltimore. “The CATE 2024 theme, ‘Reaching Across the Divide: Research, Community Implementation, and Shared Experiences’ suggests that transportation equity and mobility justice goals will only advance by connecting transportation work to community needs.” TRB says presenters “will emphasize concrete outcomes and examples of advancing transportation equity” to “bridge the gap between the transportation equity analyses that agencies conduct and conditions on the ground.” Registration is online and further information can be obtained via email.
