PennDOT Celebrates Final Restoration Of Vital I-95 Segment Destroyed In 2023 Tanker Fire

PennDOT announced yesterday the completion of permanent repairs to the elevated section of I-95 in northeast Philadelphia that collapsed last June after a tanker truck caught fire beneath the highway. Weather permitting, all restored interstate lanes plus one lane of a newly constructed Cottman Avenue ramp were expected to open to traffic early this morning. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt and a city official attended a project completion ceremony yesterday. They recognized the workers who rebuilt the segment, a crucial part of the East Coast’s surface transportation network, and said effective federal, state and local government coordination contributed to the prompt completion of a major restoration. PennDOT noted, “I-95 traffic was restored to three lanes of traffic in each direction after a temporary roadway was constructed in the center of the interstate in just 12 days [last June]. The outer sections on the northbound and southbound sides of the bridge were then rebuilt before I-95 traffic was shifted from the temporary center lanes, onto the completed, outer sections of the new bridge last November.” Secretary Carroll commented, ““Today serves as another example to all that Pennsylvania can do big things.”

Federal Grant Funds Study Of Adding Bike Paths To Rhode Island Bridges

The Newport Daily News reports, the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority (RITBA) will receive a $1.48 million federal grant to study the feasibility of adding bike lanes to the Pell and Verrazzano bridges. RITBA will distribute the funds to the organization Bike Newport, which in turn is looking for the right consultant to conduct the study. The organization has long advocated for bike access to the bridges. A prior RITBA study in 2018 indicated that, despite frequent high winds, bike lanes on both spans and the Mount Hope Bridge were possible for a cost of between $25 million and $50 million. U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) helped secure the feasibility study funding through a $59.2 million “minibus” package of FY-2024 appropriations bills.
