Ontario Premier Proposed Banning Future Tolls Before Getting Policy Study Results

Global News reports, “Recently proposed legislation to ban new tolls on Ontario’s roads was drawn up before staff with the provincial government could finish studying the pros and cons of charging drivers to use certain routes, internal notes suggest.” The study was to include an analysis of tolling in other jurisdictions. It was requested by the provincial auditor general, who criticized “inconsistent” tolling policies in the province. The ruling government agreed to the study, and the transport ministry projected completion by the end of this year. Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s office has not said whether the study is still underway. (TRN inserted a link in quoted text.)

Meanwhile, OTA Deputy Director Joe Eschelle is working with highway patrol to enforce parking restrictions on the turnpike shoulder, where dozens of trucks sometimes can be seen lined up. Additional parking already has been added to the eastbound service plaza in nearby Chandler. The article takes note of the safety implications of providing commercial truck drivers with too few roadside parking spots.
