North Carolina Road And Bridge Flood Alert System Draws Attention Of Other States
Spectrum News 1 (Charlotte) reports on a flood warning system North Carolina DOT developed with $2 million provided by state lawmakers after 2018’s Hurricane Florence. The system relies on an expanded network of gauges that provide advance warning about roads and bridges “in danger of failing because of flooding.” In addition to furthering highway safety during extreme weather events, the system helps NCDOT conduct maintenance and recovery operations more efficiently. The article notes that several sister states are showing interest in the system, which is one of 12 finalists in this year’s America’s Transportation Awards competition sponsored by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and AAA.

The University of Missouri announced the creation of the Missouri Work Zone Safety Center of Excellence (MOWZES) housed at the school’s College of Engineering. “The center’s goal is to lead research and outreach on developing behavioral, educational, engineering and technology solutions to achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries in work zones.” The center’s current research projects are supported by a combined $1.5 million from Missouri DOT and the Federal Highway Administration. As Missouri embarks on a five- to seven-year expansion of I-70, the center’s research will focus on emerging technologies, including autonomous vehicle traffic, artificial intelligence to predict crash risk, measures to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, and road accommodations for bicyclists, pedestrians and people with disabilities. The center will utilize the university’s transportation simulation lab, ZouSim.

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) will host a webinar tomorrow afternoon on Portland cement concrete pavement joint sealing material technology and best practices in the evaluation and application of joint seals. TRB notes that the technology “has evolved in recent decades,” and a National Cooperative Highway Research Program publication is available to help “establish a standardized approach to joint sealant evaluation by sharing the current state-of-practice from state departments of transportation.” Tomorrow’s presenters include Texas A&M engineering professor Dan Zollinger and the American Concrete Pavement Association’s Larry Scofield. Registration is conducted online.
