Estimated Traffic Fatalities Continue To Decline, Overall And In 29 States

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released its “early estimates of traffic fatalities for the first half of 2023, estimating that traffic fatalities declined for the fifth straight quarter.” The number of fatalities nationwide in the first half of 2023 — 19,515 — was down about 3.3 percent year-over-year. That’s despite a roughly 2.3 percent uptick in the number of vehicle miles traveled (VMT), resulting in 1.24 fatalities per 100 VMT. “After spiking during the pandemic, traffic deaths are continuing to slowly come down — but we still have a long way to go,” USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg commented in the news release. Despite the promising metric, NHTSA predicts that many states, as well as Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, will see increased fatalities by the end of the year. The release lists several NHTSA safety initiatives, including its proposal to require emergency braking systems in passenger cars, light trucks and heavy vehicles; a new rule for seat belt warning systems; and a Standing General Order to collect more data from crashes involving autonomous and semi-autonomous driving systems. State-level support for roadway safety also is recapped, as is the National Roadway Safety Strategy and Call to Action campaign.
