Reaction To Approval Of NY Thruway Toll Hikes Is Subdued
In a detailed news release, the New York Thruway Authority reminded customers that it is entirely user-fee supported and said the toll rate hikes approved earlier this week will create “a responsible, stable financial plan and ensure[ ] the Authority can meet its future capital and infrastructure needs.”
Reaction to the authority board vote on the schedule of rate adjustments has been relatively subdued. WKTV reports that one upstate Republican lawmaker expressed disappointment, stating “While I recognize that there is a need to maintain the Thruway system, this toll hike will further burden New Yorkers and visitors to our state at a time when many are struggling due to high prices, rising energy costs and other economic challenges.” “Land Line” Magazine, a trucking industry publication, devoted most of its coverage to the upcoming rate changes, the rationale for their adoption, and the lengthy public review process that preceded adoption. It only noted in passing that toll increases were opposed by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and some state lawmakers.

In a contributed article to Washington Business Journal, Cintra-led I-66 Express Mobility Partners encourages metro DC businesses to recognize the benefits of commercial travel on the tolled express lanes outside the capital beltway. “Month-over-month,” the concessionaire states, “vehicle counts have steadily increased since the 66 Express officially opened ahead of schedule. . . . In addition, the roadway is carrying increasing numbers of commercial vehicles, from contractor vans to 18-wheelers, as more local and regional businesses choose the option of predictable, consistent travel times along the busy I-66 corridor.” The remainder of the article “serves as a how-to guide” to business customer use of express lanes.

The Connexion reports, a French motorist association is threatening to sue APRR, operator of France’s first open-road tolling (ORT) section on the A79 motorway, over complaints that it doesn’t do enough to warn entering drivers they are subject to paying a toll or explain how the tolling system operates. A number of people claim they had no knowledge of the highway segment’s toll until they received a notice of non-payment that included a penalty fee. An association representative stated, “Either they roll [ORT] out across the whole of France, so that everyone understands it, or don’t do it. You can’t have a motorway that is not like the others because it becomes a trap for drivers.” (The Connexion notes that ORT has been introduced elsewhere in France and other EU countries.) APRR responded that it is in full compliance with government requirements for posting signs and otherwise informing motorists about ORT functionality.
