HNTB Survey Finds Growing US Awareness And Acceptance Of Tolled Managed Lanes

“With increasing congestion along the nation’s roadways, 67% of Americans are willing to pay higher taxes or tolls to fund additional infrastructure improvements that would ensure quality roads and provide a more reliable trip time for their commutes,” according to the results of a June 2023 random nationwide survey of 1,000 adults announced yesterday by HNTB. Other findings highlighted by HNTB include:

  • 51% of respondents said there is more traffic congestion now than just a year ago;
  • 84% said they experience congestion on their daily commute;
  • of all the respondents who are daily commuters, half said they would be willing to pay a toll to reduce driving time, but among urban commuters the percentage was 57%;
  • 88% of respondents said they would likely use priced managed lanes “in some capacity;” and
  • 7 in 10 agreed that priced managed lanes can help manage or reduce traffic congestion.

HNTB added that the results indicate the number of Americans who have heard of price managed lanes increased 2.5 over the past decade. HNTB commissioned the poll, “Funding Congestion Solutions-2023,” from Material+, a global customer experience research and consulting firm.

Along with releasing the survey results, HNTB posted a YouTube channel video of Kevin Hoeflich, PE, its Toll Market Sector Leader, explaining how drivers benefit from having the choice to use a priced managed lane.

San Miguel Tollway Unit Reports Double-Digit Growth In 1H-2023 Net Income

Manila Standard reports, “The tollway unit of San Miguel Corp. said [yesterday] it posted a 27-percent increase in first-half net income on higher toll revenues and lower expenses. SMC SLEX Inc., formerly South Luzon Tollways Corp., logged a net income of P2.01 billion [37.8 million USD] from January to June, up from P1.58 billion [28.4 million USD] in the same period last year. Revenue from toll operations amounted to P3.41 billion [61.38 million USD], up 10 percent from P3.12 billion in the same period last year.” SLEX reported that average daily traffic — 351,024 — was five percent lower than in the corresponding period of 2022, “reflecting the impact of the Seamless Project which removed the TR3 toll plaza which had an open system with a separate traffic count.” (The change in volume did not reduce toll revenue.) The company noted that it reduced costs by three percent over the first half. This year, SMC SLEX has a capital budget of P7.4 billion (133.2 million USD), which will partially fund its construction of the new Batangas to Lucena tollway and also cover South Luzon Expressway repair and maintenance.
