With New Extension, VDOT And Transurban Reversible Express Lane Will Be Nation's Longest

DCist reports, “The last planned extension of the I-95 Express Lanes is set to open late [tonight], and with the opening, Virginia will have the longest reversible toll lane in the nation at more than 45 miles long.” During a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday — it was attended by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R), US Senator Tim Kaine (D) and several other prominent officials — there were predictions that the expanded facility will substantially relieve congestion in one of the nation’s busiest highway corridors and boost the regional economy. The article looks at how the lanes will operate and mentions the difficulties Transurban had to surmount to bring the so-called FredEx project to completion.

Philippine Government Approves "Dry Run" Of Improved AET System

Philippine Daily Inquirer reports, “Tollway concessionaires are set to conduct a two-month dry run for [a contactless electronic toll payments system] starting Sept. 1. In a statement, the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) said the activity would ‘ascertain the readiness of the tollway concessionaires and operators for the smooth and efficient reimplementation of the contactless program.’ The Department of Transportation issued an order in 2020 requiring cashless transactions using RFID (radio frequency identification) stickers as it sought to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19. Due to complaints arising from glitches in the electronic toll collection system, however, the department later allowed vehicles with no RFID stickers and required cash lanes in all toll plazas.” TRB reportedly decided to authorize tests on the North Luzon Expressway, Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, Cavite-Laguna Expressway, and Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway-C5 Southlink after conducting performance audits on 717 existing AET lanes.
