Transurban Cites Its Monetary Support For Metro DC Multimodal Transportation
In a news release, Transurban North America stated that its “dedication to providing travelers with choices goes beyond the choice to skip traffic by using the Express Lanes,” and it is continuously looking for other ways to improve mobility, as evidenced by its support for metro DC pedestrian infrastructure and public transportation. “Since opening the 395 Express Lanes in 2019, we have been a proud contributor to [the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission’s] Commuter Choice Program, giving $15 million yearly to promote multimodal investments along our 395 and 95 Express Lanes corridors. We have been recognized in the region for our contributions to Commuter Choice, winning this year’s Virginia Transit Association’s Outstanding Contribution by a Business Award for its support of the Commuter Choice Program.” The release spotlights the commission’s recent announcement that it has approved about $48 million in funding for 13 projects that, according to Transurban, will increase regional transit service and incentivize commuters to take advantage of shared transportation options. Governor Jim Justice (R) announced the launch of the West Virginia Infrastructure Hub website, a resource designed to provide “complete access to the state’s plans and accomplishments” under the IIJA and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The state expects to receive a total of $7 billion in IIJA funding through 2027, a record for federal infrastructure investment. IIJA allocations already announced include $3 billion for highway projects, $506 million for bridge replacements and repairs, $190 million for public transportation, and $46 million for electric vehicle infrastructure construction. Because of the volume of projects planned and already underway, the website “is the most accurate and transparent way for people to keep track of how federal dollars are being spent,” Justice stated. Its purpose is to show the location, cost and aims of each funded project, and to measure results in data such as miles of highway paved and number of residences and businesses receiving broadband access. “In the coming months,” the announcement stated, “a statewide fund tracker tool will be rolled out to facilitate coordination among state and local agencies and economic development representatives, provide technical assistance and training, and support local communities across the state to secure federal funds through the IIJA, the [IRA] and [the Chips and Science Act].”
