Survey Shows Americans Will Still Rely On Cars, But Increasingly Accept Car Ownership Alternatives

Zipcar, the car-sharing service company, says the results of consumer research it commissioned indicate “Americans are wondering if car ownership is necessary.” It used Wakefield Research to survey 1,000 “nationally representative US adults . . . , an oversample to increase the total number of college students to 500,” and found that 35 percent “would be at least somewhat likely to give up owning a personal vehicle by the end of the decade,” and nearly 1 in 5 “are very likely or extremely likely to do so. These potentially carless drivers are not alone: almost half of all adults (44%) already know a peer getting by just fine without owning a car.” However, the results also show that Americans are still heavily reliant on automobile transportation. Nearly all respondents (95 percent) said they need access to a car at least sometimes, including 84 percent who said they depend on driving “often or all the time.”
