Kapsch Collaborates With Canadian Research Center On CV Technology Development
Kapsch TrafficCom announced that it is collaborating with a Canadian transportation research and development complex on “state-of-the-art connected vehicle solutions including hardware and software to improve road safety for smart intersections and railroad crossings.” Kapsch has provided Area X.O and its facilities in Ottawa with hardware, including roadside and onboard units, that are employed in testing connected vehicle use cases, including autonomous driving. Through a partnership with Blackberry Certicom, Kapsch has integrated technology to “safeguard the cybersecurity posture for V2X communications, and advance secure deployments for connected mobility solutions with municipalities.” The entire solution is managed through Kapsch’s Connected Mobility Control Center (CMCC), “a software application that allows the road operator to oversee all connected vehicle system assets from a central platform and to configure them remotely. The CMCC further allows Area X.O, the City of Ottawa and other partners to capture data generated within the corridor for usage by other transportation systems or after-the-fact analysis.” Area X.O, operated and funded by nonprofit economic development entity Invest Ottawa, aims to accelerate time-to-market and commercial adoption of next-gen technology.

Transport Topics reports, improved services and amenities for truckers was a major consideration in the New York State Thruway Authority’s $450 million, multi-year undertaking to revamp its 27 service areas. “Built in the 1950s, the service areas last saw any significant change in the 1990s prior to the extensive renovation project that got into gear in 2021.” New features for commercial drivers include traffic cameras to show real-time truck parking availability. Four of the service areas will be especially tailored to truckers with “a separate entrance, lounge, showers, lockers, restrooms and washers/dryers.” The features were requested in a 2018 motorist survey. “Most truckers who responded (59 percent) spent over 200 days driving on New York’s highways and the Thruway during the prior year.” In all, six of the service areas have been reopened, and six more will come online this calendar year. All are expected to be complete in 2025.

WFTV reports, Drivers stopping or slowing to admire the wildflower patches along Florida’s Turnpike are causing traffic flow and safety issues, according to state police. They’ve noticed, and they are warning about a recent increase in risky driving behavior that may be the result of social media messages drawing attention to the colorful floral displays. The state has wildflowers planted at more than a hundred sites on interstate highways to further beautification, and conservation, and lower maintenance costs.
