The Post-Star reports, investigators with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are participating in “targeted enforcement” activities aimed at stopping the use of fraudulent license plates. Their efforts involve collaboration with agencies including the state police, MTA police, New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, and the sheriffs departments of New York City and Albany County.
According to a recent DMV news release, the department’s actions so far this year have resulted in the issuance of 420 citations, the seizure of vehicles and license plates and the discovery of 11 fraudulent temporary registrations. It notes that while fraudulent plates are primarily used to evade payment of tolls, citations and vehicle fees, they also help perpetrators of major and violent crimes avoid identification and arrest.
