Cycling Advocates Oppose Maryland Proposal For Toll Bridge Lane-Sharing
Maryland Matters reports on objections to a Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) proposal to ensure safe lane sharing on the new Nice-Middleton toll bridge. “Cycling advocates from around the state described the proposal, which includes a light system warning motorists that a cyclist is on the bridge, as ‘ludicrous’ and ‘unconscionable’ and ‘malpractice.’ Advocates say if the proposal moves forward, cycling enthusiasts would be unlikely to use the bridge because of safety concerns.” MDTA had to create the plan because the former gubernatorial administration made a controversial decision to exclude dedicated bike and pedestrian lanes from the bridge’s design. Active transportation supporters made an unsuccessful attempt to stop demolition of the original bridge so that it could be converted to bike and pedestrian use.

The Hill reports, all 13 Republicans on the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee have signed a letter raising concerns about the environmentalist background of President Biden’s pick to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Acting Administrator Ann Carlson was the agency’s chief counsel when it announced more stringent fuel efficiency standards last year — standards that are under challenge by several states that claim NHTSA “exceeded its statutory authority” in setting them. The committee’s Republican members fear Carlson will “follow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and set strict fuel economy standards intended to push Americans into buying electric vehicles (EVs).” Their substantive concerns are countered by NHTSA, which argues EV adoption has net benefits for society. The same committee has already blocked Biden nominees for the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration. Three Democratic Party members facing reelection are reportedly under intense pressure to join in opposing Carlson’s nomination.
Odessa American reports, Senate committee member Ted Cruz (R-TX) and a House Republican colleague have doubled down on their opposition to Carlson’s nomination in response to a letter they received from 43 oil and natural gas trade organizations that “strenuously” object to her confirmation.

CNN Business reports, last week, “New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it would resume posting automated transit alerts to Twitter . . . after the social media company backtracked on a plan to charge public service accounts for access to the platform. In a [May 4 statement], MTA Acting Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara said Twitter had tried to charge the MTA more than $500,000 a year for access to its platform, but that the MTA refused. ‘We’re glad that Twitter has committed to offering free API access for public service providers,’ the MTA tweeted. . . . In another tweet, it added: ‘We know that customers missed us, so starting today, we’ll resume posting service alerts. . . .” (TRN inserted a link in quoted text.)
