Maine Turnpike And Transit Advocates Differ Over Efficacy Of Connector Project

Maine Public Media reports, Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) chief executive Peter Mills is convinced the proposed, $230-million-plus Gorham Connector project is the best way to relieve the traffic congestion choking secondary roads in communities surrounding Portland. The new tollway would link MTA exit 45 to the Gorham Bypass and provide a faster, more direct route for commuters. Mills is supported by several local governments, but Portland city officials and some transit advocates believe there is a better solution: build a rapid transit system to connect Gorham, Westbrook, and Portland, communities once served by an electric trolley line. The two sides are debating whether construction of an additional highway will hinder the state’s attainment of climate improvement goals.

Transurban Seeks Help Combatting Text Scams Trending In Australasia

9News reports on Transurban’s effort to thwart schemes that victimize Linkt toll system customers by sending them fraudulent text messages demanding toll payment. The company is sponsoring a prize drawing to encourage people targeted by scammers to make a report before they delete. A Transurban executive says the information is passed on to telecommunications providers that can block illegal messaging. Research shows that although 57 percent of recipients delete the fake texts, just nine percent follow up with a report to Linkt.

New Zealand Herald (subscription required for full access) recently reported on a government warning that text scams are on the increase in New Zealand, some of which involve fraudulent requests for toll payment.
