New York Governor Hochul Kicks Off Bear Mountain Bridge Centennial Celebrations

Times Union reports, the Bear Mountain Bridge, a New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA) span, is approaching the 100th anniversary of its opening, a landmark that will be commemorated over the coming months in “a centennial website, a documentary film and an international bridge engineering conference.” Last Thursday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) joined NYSBA officials and other dignitaries at the bridge to announce celebratory plans and dedicate a time capsule. (TRN inserted a link in the quoted text.)

According to a news release by the governor, the Bear Mountain, which was built and originally maintained by a private company, “was a groundbreaking engineering achievement for its time,” “the first suspension bridge with a concrete deck,” and, briefly, holder of the title, “bridge with the longest suspended central span in the world.” The release adds, “Many consider the innovations with the Bear Mountain Bridge to have spurred a boom in bridge building in New York State and the entire country.” The International Cable Supported Bridge Operators Association (ICSBOA) will spotlight the span during its 12th international conference, scheduled to take place at the nearby US Military Academy at West Point in October 2024.
