US Governors Group Suggests Ways To Use FHWA Funds For Workforce Development

The National Governors Association (NGA) published recommendations for taking advantage of the opportunities the IIJA affords state officials to use funds from four FAST Act programs for infrastructure workforce development. The recommendations emerged from a Policy Academy on Scaling Work-Based Learning and a subsequent initiative NGA undertook with Connecticut, Idaho, North Carolina and Oregon. Those four states “received technical assistance and engaged in peer learning” over the past year with the NGA Best Practices Center. In the article published yesterday, the center’s staff commented, “As states implement the IIJA, it will be critical that they ensure workers are equipped to participate successfully in the highway construction workforce and that education partners and the public workforce system understand employers’ talent needs. States that are considering leveraging FAST Act funds to develop their highway construction workforce may look to the strategies carried out in Idaho and Oregon as examples.”
