Poole Suggests Ways To Overcome Truckers' Antipathy To Tolling

The trucking industry’s persistent opposition to the expansion of US tolling inhibits government’s ability to form toll-revenue-supported public-private partnerships to upgrade highway infrastructure, according to a new commentary by the Reason Foundation’s Robert Poole. He suggests ways to address truckers’ four primary tolling objections and persuade them “that some form of customer-friendly tolling would open the door to an improved and expanded 21st-century Interstate highway system.” Legislation could resolve three of the most common hauling industry complaints, which deal with how and where toll revenue is spent, and the imposition of tolls on top of highway use and fuel taxes. As to the fourth gripe — that toll collection is an inefficient and costly method of raising revenue — Poole says truckers are simply wrong about contemporary overhead costs.
