Colorado Will Crack Down On I-70 Express Rulebreakers In 2023
Colorado has a new law allowing the state DOT to monitor and fine drivers who flout the access rules for peak-period I-70 Mountain Express Lanes, Colorado Public Radio reports. State officials say enforcement measures, which will be rolled out gradually in 2023, will make the roads safer. Through a pending contract with Blissway, roadside cameras will be installed to detect infractions, for which drivers will be mailed citations ranging from $150 to $250. Fines will be payable in cash (at gas stations or grocery stores) or online. The state also has authority to block the vehicle registrations of motorists who persistently ignore citations.

WJBK reports, the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association, a construction industry trade group, wants state lawmakers to impose a mileage-based user fee on electric vehicle (EV) owners. (Michigan currently has 10,600.) “The road builders are telling lawmakers if the EV owners don’t pay some taxes, the already declining road revenue problem will get worse.” Recognizing that the fee will be a tough sell, the association proposes that the state start with a pilot program open to volunteers. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) hasn’t taken a stand on the proposal, but she acknowledges the state needs a plan for replacing its dwindling fuel tax revenues.
