VICE Debunks Claim That $400 Uber Charge Included $140 In Tolls And Taxes
Motherboard (by VICE) dissects a venture capitalist’s complaint, set out in a tweet with “clear anti-big-government implications,” that he paid $140 in tolls and taxes during an Uber ride Monday from Manhattan to Philadelphia. As for tolls, Motherboard shows that a private passenger car driver would have paid just $25.00 on a one-way trip over the same route instead of the substantially higher amount cited in the tweet. The article traces most of the costs complained of back to Uber and concludes, “It is more than a bit silly to take a $400 Uber along one of the country’s most convenient rail routes and complain about excessive tolling. It is even sillier to do so without examining the bill to figure out what actually happened. In this case, [venture capitalist Martin Varsavsky’s] knee-jerk reaction to blame ‘government’ only highlighted how big corporations can make people’s lives more difficult while avoiding blame.”

Gothamist reports, it’s been a decade since Hurricane Sandy flooded the North River Tunnel (circa 1910), causing extensive and permanent damage to a vital segment of the US transportation system. The delay-plagued Gateway Program’s promise to create an alternate flood-resistant tunnel won’t be fulfilled until at least 2038, provided federal and state funding commitments remain in place. In the meantime, various officials say they’re relying on a hope that another emergency doesn’t devastate the facility, which Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) likens to an aorta when he describes its function in the northeast transportation corridor.

Nextgov reports, the Surface Transportation Security Advisory Committee, the body that helps the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) develop and implement security policies and programs, will hold its annual public meeting in Springfield, Virginia, on November 17. The meeting will be open to a limited number of WebEx participants on first-to-register basis. Nextgov also notes that TSA recently issued another in a series of cybersecurity directives, this one imposing requirements on passenger and freight rail carriers.

The 407 ETR operating concession announced the donation of more than 176,000 CDN (about 129,800 USD) to Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in 2022 “to help protect and care for Ontario’s biodiversity and natural spaces. The funding is helping to support ecologically significant lands, including the Happy Valley Forest and MacMillan Nature Reserve. . . .” In addition to making a direct funding commitment, the concession donated two dollars for every customer who last summer accepted an invitation to convert to paperless billing. NCC expressed its thanks to the company and the over 60,000 customers who agreed to go paperless. Said 407 ETR chief executive Javier Tamargo, “We understand how biodiversity is intrinsically linked to the health of our planet and we’re doing our part to minimize our impact on the environment.”
