Maryland Governor Inaugurates New US 301 Toll Bridge

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) issued a news release on yesterday’s ceremonial opening of the new $463 million Nice/Middleton (US 301) toll bridge, which, as he noted, was delivered on-budget and three months ahead of schedule. The span has a new free-flow electronic toll system, shoulders, four traffic lanes and a concrete median barrier. It replaces an 82-year-old structure that had just two undivided lanes. Hogan praised the Maryland Transportation Authority, federal and local officials, and the bridge’s Skanska-Corman-McLean design-build team for their contributions to the successful outcome of the project. The new bridge is due to be fully open to traffic by early today.

White House Summit Explores Ways To Accelerate IIJA Implementation

Associated Press reports, the White House is holding a virtual “Accelerating Infrastructure Summit” today “to help speed up construction projects tied to the [Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA)].” The meeting, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, is part of an effort “to improve coordination with the mayors and governors who directly account for 90% of the spending.” It occurs “at a critical moment for the nearly year-old law as high inflation and worker and material shortages are threatening to delay many projects. . . . Administration officials plan to use the summit to smooth the way for accelerating the pace of construction, which in turn can help to control costs and maximize the value of dollars spent.”

KPLC notes, the list of transportation industry stakeholders scheduled to speak includes Louisiana transportation chief and AASHTO president Dr. Shawn Wilson, and Washington State transportation secretary Roger Millar.
