Oregon Toll Advisory Committee Holds First Meeting On Wednesday
KPTV reports, the first meeting of Oregon DOT’s Regional Toll Advisory Committee is scheduled for Wednesday morning, August 24. Among other things, committee members will discuss their mission and workplan, and the status of I-5 and I-205 tolling projects. The public is invited to attend (in-person or electronically), and a ten-minute comment period is included in the agenda.
According to ODOT’s website, the 25-member group “will advise the ODOT Director in developing toll projects in the Portland metropolitan area. Committee meetings will provide a forum to provide feedback to ODOT leadership in advance of OTC or ODOT toll-related decisions.”

The Washington Post reports, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has firmly rejected calls to delay demolition of an 80-year-old span when the Nice/Middleton toll bridge replacement project is completed later this year. A number of federal and state lawmakers recently renewed requests that the old bridge be preserved for pedestrian and cyclist use, but MDTA leaders rejected the idea on the basis that “demolition is simply a question of practicality: No one stepped up to bear the cost of maintaining the old bridge, and leaving it standing could create engineering problems for the new span.” Advocates for the span’s preservation are exploring “one last gambit, while citing environmental concerns: Challenging a state plan that would involve blowing up the bridge with underwater explosives.”

According to a Jersey Journal op-ed appearing on NJ.com, Governor Phil Murphy (D) is misguided in supporting the proposed Newark Bay-Hudson County turnpike extension program that is opposed by local officials in the nearby cities of Hoboken and Jersey City. “This is not simply a case of locals standing in the way of regional growth,” since the governor and opponents “simply don’t agree on whether the project will work to relieve congestion. In this case, Gov. Murphy has it wrong.” The authors, Rutgers and Cornell academics in public policy and city planning, avoid using the term “induced demand,” but rely on the concept to argue that the program will “result in more than 100,000 miles of extra driving in the region each day,” instead of reducing turnpike congestion.
