Mint reports, India “may soon come up with standard operating procedure (SoP) for strict adherence to quality standards by contractors, developers and engineers in construction of roads and highways across the country,” the secretary of the national highways ministry told an industry group. The official commented that quality control has emerged as a major issue in the expansion of India’s highway network, and even major contractors practice “sloppy” quality control measures. He added that the government intends to impose penalties on contractors, developers and engineers who certify substandard work.
