Maryland EV Owners Will Loose Exemption From HOV Lane Requirements

The Washington Post reports, a Maryland state program that permits EV and hybrid vehicle owners to use HOV lanes without the required number of occupants is set to expire on September 30 and cannot be extended without legislation. Virginia scaled back a similar program several years ago. “EV and hybrid drivers in the Washington region have for years taken advantage of the end-run around the carpooling requirement to drive on HOV lanes, but the rules have mystified others. While the exemption was viewed as an incentive to encourage the purchase of vehicles that are less harmful to the environment, other commuters complained about HOV lanes becoming more congested because of solo drivers in EVs.”

Hartford Courant reports, “Facing a tough political fight in a blue state, [Connecticut Republican gubernatorial candidate] Bob Stefanowski has hired the leader of the grassroots movement against highway tolls to be his new campaign manager for the three-month battle against Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont.” Patrick Sasser, a Stamford firefighter known for his “aggressive, high-energy style,” organized grassroots opposition to a highway tolling plan introduced by Lamont in 2019. He will retain his full-time job while leading Stefanowski’s second contest with Lamont for the governor’s office.

Will A Charging Station Network Draw Tourists To Lake Michigan's Shoreline?

MLive.com reports, the governors of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin have agreed to build a network of EV charging stations around the 1,100-mile drivable shore line of Lake Michigan. Their Lake Michigan EV Circuit Tour initiative aims to draw eco-tourists to the region. “The chargers will be installed in key coastal communities at lighthouses, state parks, breweries, vineyards, restaurants, and other small businesses. Along the route will also be existing charging infrastructure networks at large entertainment attractions in cities along the route including Chicago, Milwaukee, and Green Bay.”

Illinois Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) issued a news release on her state’s participation in the initiative.
