Oklahoma Turnpike Expects to Open Gilcrease Extension Within Weeks
Tulsa World reports, the Gilcrease Expressway extension contractors (an AECOM and Duit partnership) have scheduled the project’s substantial completion for August 29. “Turnpike officials will then review the work, a process that could take a few weeks, before opening the divided four-lane highway to the public,” according to T.J. Dill, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority’s construction director. The authority board is expected to approve toll rates for the facility at its August 23 board meeting. Citrus County Chronicle reports, Lane Construction will receive one of the 2022 Best in Construction awards from the Florida Transportation Builders’ Association for its work on the Suncoast Parkway extension (Suncoast Parkway 2, Phase 1). The 13-mile, $135 million project, completed in February, opened a direct route from US 98 in Hernando County to SR 44 in Citrus County, and involved the construction of 15 bridges and a multi-use trail.

The Age reports, a committee of the Legislative Council, the upper house of the New South Wales Parliament, today published a report on its broad inquiry into state toll facilities and systems. Among other things, the committee recommended that the government “review the rate at which tolls increase for Sydney’s motorways,” “cut administration fees for motorists who do not have tags and other arrangements in place to pay for them,” “adopt a network-wide pricing model for tolling,” and consider “toll caps and ‘appropriate flag falls’ [fixed minimum charges], rather than just distance-based charges.” The committee chair, an opposition representative who expressed criticism of the present tolling regime, said the report “paves the road to the sensible and equitable tolling reform our state so desperately needs.” In a dissent to the report, three government representatives said the committee failed to acknowledge the benefits of public-private infrastructure investment or propose an alternative to current state policy on transportation project financing.
