Snowstorm Strands Motorists Along A Busy, 50-Mile Segment Of I-95 In Virginia

NBC News reports, “Drivers along a 50-mile stretch of Interstate 95 in Virginia have been stranded in freezing temperatures for hours after a crash involving multiple vehicles brought the roadway to a standstill and the first mid-Atlantic storm of the year dumped more than a foot of snow on the region. U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine is among those caught in the chaos, with the Democrat from Virginia saying he has been stuck in traffic for at least 19 hours.”

The Washington Post reports, VDOT crews are “treating the highway and trying to clear off ice that refroze overnight in the cold temperatures. The Fredericksburg area got around 12 inches of snow [yesterday], and officials gave no exact time for when the highway would reopen.”

Transurban announced on social media this morning that the 95 and 395 Express Lanes are closed “to help with VDOT emergency efforts.”

The New York Times notes that the I-95 segment near Fredericksburg, Virginia, is close to Washington and is one of the busiest travel corridors in the US. “Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia said the state was sending an emergency message to stranded drivers and trying to reroute them.”

CNN also reports on the I-95 emergency.

“Overdrive” Magazine reports, “Autonomous truck driving technology startup TuSimple said it successfully completed last month what it bills as ‘the world’s first fully autonomous semi-truck run on open public roads without a human in the vehicle and without human intervention.’ The run took place Dec. 22 with TuSimple’s up-fitted autonomous semi-truck beginning its journey from a rail yard in Tucson, Arizona, and traveling more than 80 miles on surface streets and highways at night to its destination — a high-volume distribution center in the Phoenix metro area.”

TechCrunch also covers this story.

A TuSimple news release on the truck run links to a “complete uncut video of the entire fully autonomous drive.”
