NJ Bridge Commission Proposes Three-Year Rate Adjustment to Fund Maintenance Work

NJ.com reports, the Cape May County (New Jersey) Bridge Commission is proposing a series of annual toll rate adjustments that would double the cost of a passenger vehicle crossing over three years. Beginning next year, “the current $1.50 cost for most vehicles to cross [the commission’s five bridges] would increase 50 cents per year until the toll hits $3. Higher tolls for passenger vehicles with additional axles, trucks and recreational vehicles would also increase.” The commission will accept public comment on the proposal through January 8.

Cape May County Herald (subscription required) reports on the proposal and the commission’s plan to use additional revenue to extend the useful life of its spans, most of which were constructed in the 1930s.

Kentucky Remains Committed To Funding Brent Spence Project Without Tolls

WKRC reports, “Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear [yesterday] recommitted to finding a way to fund the $2-billion Brent Spence Bridge project without using tolls, saying he wants the state to be ‘first in line’ to apply for new federal infrastructure dollars.” In an interview with the station, Beshear, a first-term Democrat, said he is “talking to everybody in D.C. who will listen to me,” about the federal government assuming the brunt of the cost to build a new bridge next to the existing one to handle I-75 traffic. He said the old bridge would subsequently carry just I-71 and local traffic.
