Tolling Of Bay Area's Newest Express Lane Begins Friday
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission reminds motorists that dynamic tolling of the newest I-680 southbound express lane between Martinez and Walnut Creek will begin at 5:00 AM this Friday, August 20. The 11-mile facility, which currently operates as a traditional carpool lane, connects with an existing Walnut Creek-to-San Ramon segment to form a continuous 22-mile southbound express lane through Contra Costa County that operates on weekdays from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

According to a City Observatory article reprinted on Streetsblog USA, vehicle emissions are the cause of much of the climate change Americans are starting to experience. As a consequence, “We have to end the era of car-powered suburban sprawl, and make it legal — and less expensive — to build housing in our urban cores, or in the central business districts of suburban areas, near jobs, transit, and services.” Conversion to electric vehicle use is part of the solution, but it can’t happen fast enough to be the entire solution. “At this stage, if electric vehicles are to play a major role in solving the climate crisis — which they must — they have to be paired with dramatic land use reform that shortens or eliminates a substantial portion of all vehicle trips, and replaces them with transit, walking, biking, shared vehicles, and other forms of mobility.” (The author, Matthew Lewis, is communications director for a California affordable housing advocacy organization.)
