Protests Ensue When US Says It Won't Admit Canadians Solely For Vaccination
The Financial Times reports, US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) has clarified its policy on admitting Canadian citizens who are seeking COVID-19 immunization. The agency said it will continue to deny entry to Canadian travelers whose sole purpose is to get vaccinated. However, if a person enters the US for a purpose defined as “essential” and receives a vaccine shot incidentally, “it is not part of the overall admissibility determination.” Confusion about the policy arose earlier this week because of a Canadian government pronouncement about quarantine regulations.
Global News reports (predictably) that the CBP pronouncement evoked confusion, criticism and calls for reassessment. Earlier this week, US Representative Brian Higgins (D-NY 26), co-chair of the Congressional Northern Border Caucus and the Canada-U.S. Interparliamentary Group, took note of a vaccine surplus in his state, called on Governor Andrew Cuomo to welcome Canadians seeking immunization, and pointed to several border states (North Dakota, Alaska, Washington and Montana) that have admitted Canadian citizens for vaccination.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) advises motorists that it is not affiliated with any third-party bill payment services, and it has not granted any such services the legal authority to use its name, logo or materials. MDTA states in a notice, “If an Internet search engine has taken you to a website that is trying to charge you a processing fee to pay your toll, this is NOT DriveEzMD.com, Maryland’s official tolling website. If you have used a third party to pay your Maryland toll, you should contact that third party to ensure your toll payment has been transmitted to Maryland by the due date to avoid civil penalties for late payment.”

7 News reports, the New South Wales government says 37 percent of motorists eligible to participate in a toll-payers’ relief program have failed to register. The state gives frequent toll road customers the opportunity to obtain free or discounted car registrations “by completing one simple step online.” The program can save a motorist more than $500 (US$388.50) a year.
