Alberta Seeks Private Investment In A Highway Fix Without Imposing Tolls
660 News reports, Alberta transportation officials announced a plan to improve Calgary’s congested Deerfoot Trail highway through an investment of up to 410 million CAD (about 338.7 million USD), almost half of which they propose to obtain from private investors. They were also also quick to squelch a rumor that they plan to toll the highway. According to a transport ministry statement, “There are not, and have never been any plans to toll Deerfoot Trail, and we have been absolutely clear with Albertans: you will not have to ever pay to drive on a road that currently exists.”

Tennessee DOT announced that it awarded a contract for emergency repair of the I-40 Hernando De Soto Bridge to Kiewit Infrastructure Group. According to a TDOT news release, “The repair will be performed in two phases, and “Both phases will need to be completed before traffic can re-open on the bridge.” Phase 1 involves the installation of steel plates already undergoing fabrication on each side of the fractured member. A Phase 2 design is underway and will involve removal and replacement of the span’s cracked beam. TDOT now has a web page dedicated to the bridge repair project.

WCAX reports, the 15-month partial closure of the US-Canadian border occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic has separated families and harmed businesses in both countries. New York State Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-115) has a proposal for relieving the distress and reviving local economic activity: share the US vaccine supply with Canadian essential workers and visitors. He has the support of a chamber executive who says increasing the rate of immunization is the only way to get the border fully reopened.
WWNY reported last week, “Canadian officials are starting talks on reopening the U.S. / Canadian border after more than a year of closing it to non-essential travel. A report by Bloomberg News says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has government officials working with public health to find ways to reopen safely. This comes as our neighbors to the north are dealing with the aftermath of a COVID-19 surge and shutdown in Ontario. ElectReon, the Israel-based provider of inductive in-road charging technology, announced it is joining the “Arena of the Future” project in Brescia, Italy. The firm will “integrate its wireless technology to charge two Stellantis vehicles, and an IVECO bus while driving. The project aims to demonstrate contactless charging for a range of EVs as they drive on highways and toll roads as a potential pathway to decarbonizing our transportation systems along motorway transport corridors.”
