Despite Reduced Traffic, Work Zone Crashes Are Increasing, Missouri DOT Warns

Missouri DOT is the latest organization to register concern about “a surge in work zone crashes despite decreased traffic volumes” coinciding with the COVID-19 epidemic. The department announced Tuesday it has recorded 39 incidents of truck/trailer-mounted attenuators (TMAs) being hit in work zones so far this year. “We’ve had a 100% increase in TMA hits at a time when traffic on Missouri roads has decreased by nearly 50% for much of the year,” said MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna. The department attributes the rise in collisions to distracted driving and urges the public to avoid cell phone use and observe the state’s move over law.
