Noise Variance Allows Kiewit to Continue Night and Weekend Central 70 Work
KDVR reports, “After a lengthy five-hour hearing, Denver’s Board of Public Health & Environment voted to extend a noise variance request by Kiewit Infrastructure Company for nighttime and weekend work” on the huge Colorado DOT Central 70 Project. “Residents who spoke out against the variance raised concerns about vibrations associated with construction. Denver city ordinance does not directly address vibrations.” The article notes that the board granted Kiewit a 12-month extension, rather than the one it requested to coincide with the scheduled end of construction in 2022.

WBFO reports, “State Senator Chris Jacobs, R-Buffalo, is calling on the State Thruway Authority to suspend Grand Island bridge tolls until Canadian drivers are required to pay them. In a release Friday, Jacobs said it is not fair that New York drivers must pay on the toll road to Toronto while there is no agreement between the Thruway Authority and Canadian governments to collect tolls from Canadian drivers. ‘Why the Thruway Authority would not have negotiated this agreement with the Canadians before going to cashless tolling on the bridges is shocking to me,’ said Jacobs.” (Link inserted.)

Daily Press editors write that Hampton Roads regional transportation planning — which includes the proposed extension of HOT lanes on I-64 — is generally moving in the right direction. However, they urge state highways commissioner to reconsider his idea to build an HOT lanes entrance ramp at a major highway junction in Hampton, calling the proposal unsafe. The editors also suggest, “At some point, an important part of this regional transportation debate must include proposals for more robust public transportation. Perhaps, [Hampton Roads Transit] and regional planners can collaborate to provide public transportation that utilizes the HOT lanes as a way of getting even more vehicles off the highway during backups.”
