Washington State Increases Penalties for HOV and HOT Lane Abuses
KOMO reports, a new Washington State statute stiffening penalties for violation of HOV or HOT lane rules takes effect on Sunday, July 28. The law increases monetary penalties for first and second offenses, and imposes an additional fine of $200 if the violator used “a dummy, doll, or other human facsimile to make it appear that an additional person is in the vehicle.”

MetroNews looks at the damage the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge sustained when an overweight bus was driven across it last month. The bridge is closed to auto traffic while state and city officials discuss new measures to block overweight vehicles from causing further damage. (One solution under discussion is to impose tolls.) The article notes that the bridge is scheduled for a “full rehabilitation” in 2021.
